Interstate vs. Local Movers There is a big difference in licensing between interstate and local movers. Local movers are licensed by the State of California, while interstate movers are licensed by the US DOT. It is illegal for a local mover to cross state lines, and likewise, it is illegal for an interstate mover NOT to cross state lines. Some movers will be licensed for both intrastate (Within California) and interstate (within US). Make sure to choose a mover who is licensed for the move you are doing. Tips to Saving Money on Your Move The single most effective way to save money on your move is to be prepared. Have all of the boxes packed, and the furniture tops cleared off for easy moving. To take it one step further, you can move boxes to a central staging area to save time. You can also move any small furniture to the same area for staging, or into the garage. It's also best to move any fragile or delicate items yourself before the movers arrive, i.e. framed artwork, large mirrors, computers, ceramic sculptures and the like. If the mover's don't have to wrap and protect these items, it will save time. One thing that may not save you money is to start shuttling boxes back and forth in your car.
